City to Take Green Waste Temporarily (18-Mar-2009)

Commencing today, Wednesday 18 March 2009, the City of Canning will receive green waste from City of Canning residents and minor gardening contractors at the City’s Transfer Station in Ranford Road.

This follows the announcement by the South Metropolitan Regional Council (SMRC) of its intention to temporarily close its Bannister Road green waste processing facility from close of business Tuesday 17 March 2009 for a period of approximately four weeks. The closure is to allow for further investigation by the SMRC of the composting facility.

“These arrangements have been made to ensure that City of Canning residents continue to have a green waste disposal service during this period of time,” Chief Executive Officer Mark Dacombe said. “It will also ensure there is no impact on the process of the SMRC assessment.”

“The City will temporarily stockpile green waste on a concrete pad at the Transfer Station site,” Mark Dacombe added. “Once sufficient material is on site to fill a 5 tonne capacity compacting waste truck, it will be transported to an alternate mulching facility at Oakford.”

“Depending on the volume received the transportation may be daily,” he continued. “However there will be a maximum storage period for the green waste of 48 hours.”

Under the City’s current fee structure, pensioners will be charged $25 per trailer,

non-pensioners will be charged $30 per trailer and commercial operators will be charged $90 a tonne.

“The City has formally advised the Department of Environment and Conservation of its decision,” Mark Dacombe said.

The Transfer Station is open seven days a week from 8am to 4.30pm. All enquiries can be directed to Transfer Station on 92310716.
