The current level of waste service provided to residents of the City of Canning will not be affected by the Council’s decision to withdraw from the Southern Metropolitan Regional Council.
“The City will continue to operate its weekly putrescible waste collection service and fortnightly recycling collection service,” Mayor Joe Delle Donne said. “As we have already stated the line of process for withdrawal will take some time and during this period the level of service provided will remain the same.”
“Council is committed to waste minimisation, which includes recycling, and is proud of the level of recycling shown by our residents,” Mayor Delle Donne said.
“Council is dedicated to ensuring that it always acts in the best interests of the community, however it must be in a fiscally responsible manner,” Mayor Joe Delle Donne said. “The City is now undertaking a review of all its waste services. It is intended that the resultant waste strategy, will not only provide for the future requirements of our community’s waste disposal in a cost effective and environmentally sound manner, but also be operational prior to 1 July 2010.”
“The City will continue to honour its contractual obligations to the SMRC under the current agreement until the withdrawal is finalised,” the Mayor continued. “Council is awaiting a further report, which will include clarification on such matters as representation on the SMRC and our financial obligations.”
“Whatever action needs to be taken, residents can be assured that Council will continue to investigate all avenues available to it to keep the rates amongst the lowest in the metropolitan area.” Mayor Delle Donne said.
