“Council’s decisions to withdraw from the SMRC was made in the best interests of our community and following month of research into viable alternatives of disposing of the City’s waste,” Mayor Joe Delle Donne said.
“For some time Council has been critical of the manner in which the SMRC has handled the odour issue we do not believe they have taken the concerns of residents seriously enough and we cannot in good conscience remain a member council.”
“Council has also been concerned at the major increases in costs and we believe we can provide our residents and ratepayers with a more cost effective and efficient waste strategy, Mayor Delle Donne continued. “The line of process to withdrawal from the SMRC will take over 12 months and Council will remain a member until July 2010.”
“During this transition period council will more thoroughly investigate all the options open to it for disposal of the City’s waste,” he continued. “The City is currently reviewing all aspects of the withdrawal from the SMRC, including the matter of representation, and will report back to Council.”
