Role of the Commissioner

The Minister for Local Government, the Hon John Castrilli MLA, following the report tabled in Parliament on 15 November 2012 , has suspended the City of Canning's Mayor and Councillors, effective from 27 November 2012.  A further inquiry panel will be appointed to assess in more detail the City’s governance issues and matters for improvement.

 Mr Linton Reynolds has been appointed as Commissioner to act as the Council for the City of Canning. Mr Reynolds has extensive local government experience, having previously been the Mayor of Armadale for five terms.

The Commissioner is responsible for:

  • Providing leadership and guidance to the Canning community;
  • Assisting in communication between the City of Canning and the Canning community;
  • Representing the interests of the City of Canning;
  • Managing Council Meetings without favouritism or bias and ensuring that they are conducted in an orderly and compliant manner; 
  • Carrying out civic and ceremonial duties, including conducting citizenship ceremonies; and
  • Liasing with the City of Canning's Chief Executive Officer regarding the City's performance.

The Commissioner also has a role in developing and communicating policies, strategies and projects which promote the social, economic, environmental and cultural well being of the City of Canning.
