The Canning River Regional Park, which extends 6 kms along the Canning River between the Shelley and Nicholson Road Bridges, is a significant reserve.

Covering around 266 hectares, the Park is unique, encompassing conservation values plus provision of recreational opportunities within a highly urbanised environment.

The Canning River Eco Education Centre has been specifically designed to cater for a wide range of activities.

Incorporating a number of sustainable design features, it includes an interpretive gallery, classroom and meeting/conference room.

The Weir, built in 1927 to prevent salt water moving up river to the irrigated orchards and market gardens during the dry months, affected the ecology by confining estuarine plant populations downstream.

It was not very efficient and following construction of the dam in the Darling Ranges, a more effective weir was constructed.

The Swan River Trust is responsible for the efficient operation of the Water Corporation’s Weir.

The Weir bridge is maintained by the City.
