Youth Employment Initiative

The Youth Employment Initiative enables young people to develop employment skills, preparing them to enter the workforce with confidence.

Recruitment for the Junior Library Officer positions is currently on hold.

However, workshops focusing on resume and cover letter writing, interview skills, and financial resilience are still being conducted throughout the year. These workshops, some specifically aimed at students, continue to provide valuable skills and support to young people seeking to enhance their employability skills. Visit Eventbrite for more information.

Please visit the Careers page for other opportunities.

What is a Junior Library Officer?

Junior Library Officers support library operations by ensuring resources are organised to help customers. They ensure:

  • books and other items are well presented on shelves
  • provide outstanding levels of customer service by being welcoming and giving help where needed
  • build effective relationships with other staff members
  • contribute to the efficient operation of the Library.

Junior Library Officers work regular after school and Saturday shifts at City of Canning Library locations.

Here is what our former Junior Library Officers have to say!

"My working experience at the Canning libraries as a Junior Shelver has been very eye-opening as I learnt about the process of gaining employment. I feel it is a great way to gain your first working experience and insights into working in the customer service industry. The workshops held helped me prepare for my first paid job and obtain the skills I needed to apply."

Tristan, Junior Library Officer

"The City of Canning's Junior Library Shelver position is a great start to young people beginning their working lives, and possibly supporting career paths. As an Indigenous person, I saw this opportunity as an amazing inclusive experience that constantly uplifts and prepares you for the working world."

Curtis, Junior Library Officer
