Text Box: Neighbourhood Watch—City of Canning

YOUR FIRST STEP TO CRIME PREVENTION STARTS HERE

HOW CAN NEIGHBOURHOOD WATCH HELP YOU?

Statistics show that where there is a strong working Neighbourhood Watch programme, there is an overall reduction in the volume of crimes committed in that area.

By getting involved, you contribute to the development and continued strength of your local Neighbourhood Watch. You will also get to know your neighbours and neighbourhood, which increases the bond and security of your Neighbourhood Watch.

The City of Canning has a dedicated band of volunteers committed to reducing crime in their neighbourhood. They inform their neighbours about NHW and encourage them to become involved.

They distribute pamphlets giving details on how to increase the level of security in your home and some of them give up their time to operate the NHW Resource Centre at Westfield Carousel Shopping Centre.

End of year thank you dinner for Suburb Managers.

Neighbourhood Watch is a community based program aimed at reducing the incidence of preventable crime and preserving your way of life.

A Police Officer on patrol may not know what is normal in your street and may not recognise a stranger in your yard. You and your neighbours are in a position to observe and report anything of a suspicious nature to Police.

Most neighbours already observe activities in their street, particularly if it is not normal, however many people do not do anything about suspicious activities because they do not know what to do or if their neighbours would appreciate their involvement.

Neighbourhood Watch is protection of your property and way of life through communication and

co-operation between neighbours.

It is not a vigilante group. Any action required will be handled by the Police.

You can be involved by becoming a volunteer, a street representative, an area co-ordinator or a suburb manager.

You can apply by completing a Neighbourhood Watch Registration Form  available from the City of Canning office or the NHW Resource Centre at Carousel Shopping Centre. You will be required to have a police integrity check.

More ways to get involved:

Talk to your neighbours about becoming members of Neighbourhood Watch.

Mark your property to help discourage theft and to make identification of any recovered stolen property easier.
