PRIVACY STATEMENT AND LEGISLATION
The Information Privacy Principles in the Privacy Act apply only to Commonwealth and ACT Government Agencies.
The Public Sector in Western Australia, including Local Government, is legally unaffected by the Commonwealth Privacy Legislation.
The Western Australian Public Sector is bound to privacy and confidentiality by Common Law duty of confidentiality and in Acts that govern Agencies.
The Freedom of Information (FOI) Act confirms upon persons a legally enforceable right of access to information, a right to apply for personal information and places an obligation on a Local Government to make certain information about their operations publicly available.
Under FOI Legislation, access to information may be refused if it is believed that providing access would be a breach of the privacy of another person.
As part of the Services provided to the community, the City of Canning may collect and hold personal information in a number of records and databases. The City will only use personal information and market research for the primary purpose for which it was collected.
The City will take reasonable steps to retain confidentiality of any personal information by maintaining a secure system for storing of information, by the utilisation of appropriate technologies and will protect such information from unauthorised access, improper use, alteration, unlawful or accidental destruction or accidental loss.
