We are all in this together, here’s how the City encourages Corporate Sustainability
Sustainability Policy
The City has adopted a Sustainability Policy that is being integrated by staff across the organisation into all aspects of business by:
- Considering day-to-day activities and decision-making processes
- Council reports
- Business plans
To aid staff in the implementation, the City has undertaken extensive sustainability training and education.
The Corporate Sustainability Program supports the City to move towards more sustainable practices and processes as outlined in Council Sustainability Policy CM194. The policy was developed to define sustainability and as a way of embedding sustainability thinking into the City’s strategic planning and decision making processes. This identifies strategies, policies, projects and practices that can embed sustainability into the organisation.
Corporate Sustainability Training Program
The City has developed a a series of Strategic Sustainability Training and Departmental workshops to further explain the sustainability concepts and enable staff to get a better understanding of sustainability and how to become more sustainable. These are delivered on an ongoing basis.
Following the training staff join a cohort of Sustainability Champions or Sustainability Representatives. This allows learning’s to be further supported and ensure sustainability is supported across all of the organization.
• Sustainability Action Plan – Plans are created following the workshops and a sustainability representative in each department is responsible for updating and reporting on the progress of the plan at the Quarterly Sustainability Representatives Meetings.
• Sustainability Star Awards –The City acknowledges three individual staff members or teams for work that contributes to the sustainability of the City. Each quarter, three awards are presented at the City’s monthly Council Meeting Debrief (Open House).
So far awards have acknowledged efforts including:
o reducing waste through vermiculture
o incorporating recycled aggregates into road bases
o reducing paper use and going paperless within some teams
o the creation of Getting Green Improvement Plan at the Leisureplexes
Informal learning sessions are also available for staff on Sustainability Concepts and how they can be applied to individual lives. All of the above is promoted through the Corporate Sustainability Enewsletter, and has been evaluated in a staff wide culture change survey.
In addition sustainability is embedded into the organization by being included as a section within the Corporate Orientation, the Procurement Policy, Council Reports and Business Plans.
Travel Smart – Your Move
The Department of Transport and the Department of Environment and Conservation launched the Your Move (Travel Smart) Workplace Program to assist organisations to promote sustainable travel choices. The City developed a Travel Plan for the Civic and Administration Centre in 2013. The aim of the Travel Plan is to:
- Encourage sustainable travel options for employees commuting
- Encourage sustainable travel options for employees for business trips
- Enhance workplace access and facilities
- Policy development for sustainable travel
The City currently has a Working from Home Policy and end of trip facilities for staff who use sustainable travel options. As a result of the Travel Plan the City has established a Corporate Bike Fleet and obtained Corporate Smartriders for business trips.
