The City of Canning is aiming to reduce dependency on fossil fuels.

The Cities Utility Revolving Fund was established In 2013 to invest in energy and water efficiency.

This has allowed the following energy efficiency improvements to be made:

  • Installation of solar hot water units in 4 City buildings;
  • Installation of solar panels on 9 City buildings;
  • LED lighting upgrade at the Riverton Leisureplex and the Civic and Administration Centre Carpark; and
  • Modifications to the timing of air-conditioning within the Civic and Administration Centre.

Greensense

The city has committed to measuring and monitoring it’s energy use along with consumption of water, fuel and waste. To see how the City is tracking consumption, coming soon is the Greensense Dashboard.

Solar Power

In July and September 2014, 30kW solar panel systems were installed on the Civic and Administration Building, the Cannington Leisureplex and Riverton Leisureplex. These systems make up a third of the number of City of Canning sites that currently generate renewable energy. Since their commissioning the Civic and Administration and Leisureplex systems have generated 322,000 kWh of electricity, and saved the City of Canning $64,700 in electricity bills and saved the emission of 245 tonnes of CO2.

We have recently awarded Enigin, a Clean Energy Council Solar Approved Retailer, the contract to upgrade these three systems to 100kW solar generation systems. It is expected that the upgrades will provide an increase in electricity generation in excess of 300,000 kWh per year, which is estimated to save the City of Canning an additional $60,000 per year on its electricity bills, and save 228 tonnes of CO2 emissions per year. The total volume of carbon emissions expected to be saved per year, from the full 3 x 100kW systems, is in excess of 360 tonnes of CO2 per year. This is the equivalent of greenhouse gas emissions from 48 passenger vehicles driven for one year, or carbon sequestered by 5,700 tree seedlings grown for ten years.
