The City of Canning’s People Leaders may conduct phone interviews to assist them with shortlisting vacancies that have attracted a large volume of applications.
Phone interviews are ideally designed to test your ability to build rapport and communicate effectively so prepare as thoroughly as you would for a face-to-face interview. The City recommends brushing up your phone interview skills with these do's and don'ts tips that you might not know.
Find a quiet place
Choose an area where you can concentrate, free of distractions and interruptions.
Test phone reception
Fully charge your mobile phone and check you have good reception.
Have a copy of your resume to refer to and keep a pen and paper nearby to jot down notes.
Present yourself well
Dress up in professional attire to build confidence and smile as this will change the tone of your voice.
You want to ensure everyone can hear you so eliminate the chance of anything that will muffle your words.
Eat or drink
Only have a glass of water nearby to help you clear your throat.
Allow the interviewer to finish their question and listen carefully to what they are asking.
Rush your responses
Take your time to collect your thoughts and prepare a response that is concise and to the point.
