If you’ve been shortlisted to attend an interview, this is your chance to demonstrate to us that you are indeed the right candidate for the position.
At the City of Canning, we conduct both one-on-one and panel interviews. You will be notified in advance if there is anything you are required to bring.
We want to give you the strongest opportunity to succeed so we have listed suggestions on ways to refine your interview technique below.
Do your research
Read about the role and the City of Canning prior to the interview. Think about what value you can add and how you will distinguish yourself from other candidates.
Dress the part
First impressions count so dress appropriately in corporate attire or smart casual depending on the working environment of the role and ensure you are well-groomed. Refrain from wearing very strong scents, drinking alcohol the night before and smoking just before the interview.
Make sure you know where to go beforehand and how long it will take you. Allocate yourself extra time to get there. We recommend you aim to arrive at least 10 minutes before the interview.
Switch off your mobile before you enter the interview room.
Don’t be afraid to ask for clarification if you are not clear on the question. Speak clearly and moderate your pace.
Use relevant examples
Think of specific situations in your career in which you feel can help demonstrate the highlighted skills. Clearly explain what you did, how and why you did it and what the outcome was. Refer to the STAR model discussed in ‘Addressing the Selection Criteria’.
Be honest and know your strengths and weaknesses. Have confidence in what you do well and acknowledge where you have room for improvement.
Be aware of your body language
Shake hands firmly, maintain a good posture, smile and make eye contact.
Prepare some questions beforehand to ask the interviewer. By asking questions, it shows how interested you are in the role.
