Cannington Leisureplex reopens with a more inclusive gym

15 June 2020
Members who returned to Cannington Leisureplex last week were the first to enjoy a fully refurbished gym, and a place for people of all abilities to be active, get fit and stay heathy.

While the leisure facility has been closed due to COVID-19 restrictions, the staff at Cannington Leisureplex have refurbished the gym and installed new all-inclusive equipment, partially funded by a Stronger Communities Grant from the Federal Government.

The new machines contain seat removal options for wheelchair access and have been designed specifically for users with sensory, cognitive or physical disabilities. The layout of the gym has been modified to include the all-inclusive machines, ensuring that there is equipment to suit all member’s needs.

Mayor Patrick Hall says that it’s important that all members of our community can experience and enjoy the City’s Leisureplexes.

“With so many less-abled people living right here in our community, I am incredibly proud that both Cannington and Riverton Leisureplex offer a space where people of all abilities can feel comfortable exercising, with equipment that suits their individual needs. All of our leisure facilities now cater for those living with a disability which demonstrates the City’s commitment to our disabled community.”

“The staff at Cannington Leisureplex have done an amazing job creating an inclusive environment that all members of our community can enjoy, and which will play an important role in maintaining physical wellbeing and mental health.” he said.

The Cannington Leisureplex refurbishment includes brand new gym equipment, functional training areas, a personal training studio, body composition scales and a spin studio.

The Leisureplex was awarded a Stronger Communities Grant from the Federal Government to create a more inclusive gym space. It funded 50 percent of the overall refurbishment costs, with the City contributing the rest.

“The funding contribution from the Federal Government demonstrates the enormous community benefits and positive outcomes that can be achieved when the levels of government work closely together.”

The gym is currently open and operating in line with the State Government’s Phase 3 restrictions. For the latest information please visit call 1300 422 664 or email
