The Willetton Sports Precinct is an important area within the City of Canning and hosts a variety of sporting clubs used by residents and visitors to the complex.

In 2017, the Canning Council approved in principle the Willetton Precinct Master Plan, which will transform the Willetton Precinct and assist the City in managing sustained urban growth and a high quality of life within the community.

The redevelopment consists of two projects, the City-managed Burrendah Park Ancillary Works and the Willetton Basketball Association’s Stadium Expansion Project.

The upgrade of the precinct will result in better facilities for users of the precinct, increased accessibility, improved parking options and flow of traffic.

The project meets key community aspirations in the Strategic Community Plan including creating accessible, pleasing urban spaces fit for purpose.

The City’s development of the site includes nine projects that will enhance the area, adding new and improved sporting facilities and will support the Willetton Basketball Association’s Stadium Expansion project, also a feature of the Willetton Precinct Master Plan.

Managed by the Willetton Basketball Association (WBA), the WBA Stadium Expansion Project will cost approximately $11million and see the sporting hub double in size.

WBA has received $5.5million funding from the Federal Government of Australia, $1.5million State Government of Western Australia and $2.2million direct funding from the City of Canning, along with the establishment of a loan facility to assist during WBA project construction.

The City is providing support to WBA for its basketball stadium expansion in the form of a $2.2 million grant, a short term loan (to cover the gaps between when the Willetton Basketball Association has to pay for works, and when it receives City, State and Commonwealth grants). The grant monies are then used to repay the short-term loan.  Anything owing under the short-term loan arrangement after all grant moneys are paid will be rolled over into a long term loan.

Burrendah Park Ancillary Works are anticipated to commence in October/November 2018 and run for three years. The WBA Stadium expansion project will run concurrently, but is expected to be completed by March 2020.
