Civic dinner giving back to community

21 July 2022
At its recent council meeting, City of Canning’s Council voted in favour of transforming the Mayoral Civic Dinner into a charity dinner, with funds raised injected into charities operating within Canning to directly benefit the local community.

A first for a Western Australian local government, Canning Council endorsed taking a new approach to the civic dinner as an indication of its commitment to supporting its community in a post-pandemic world.

The civic dinner, last held in 2013, will essentially be repurposed as a charity dinner with ticket sales offsetting the event cost and funds raised from corporate sponsorship and auction items donated to charities.

Traditionally local governments hold an annual dinner reception to bring together community leaders, Honorary Freeman, elected members and other dignitaries to discuss community matters and celebrate achievements.

Mayor Patrick Hall said Canning’s approach to the event would allow Council to foster relationships between the business community and local charities to give back in uncertain economic times when many in the community are doing it tough.

“When first elected Mayor I believed that an opportunity existed to reimagine the annual Mayoral Civic Dinner and create a more meaningful event which would see the City of Canning partner with our business community for a charitable purpose, seek sponsorship from the corporate sector to significantly reduce the cost of holding the event, and deliver a financial benefit to a number of local charities.

“This re-purposed event will meet each of those objectives and I am grateful to Council for its support.

“In time I hope that other local governments might follow Canning’s lead and explore ways of delivering a community benefit from their own civic events,” Mayor Hall said.

The charities are yet to be decided but will be assessed by criteria which includes a requirement that they are headquartered in the City and directly contribute to the local community.

The event will go ahead if a minimum number of ticket sales are sold by late September.
