Cycling Without Age wheels into Canning
13 December 2019
Cycling Without Age, an international not-for-profit organisation that connects elderly people and those less-abled with the outdoors by giving them free rides on trishaw ebikes, has launched in Canning.
Cycling Without Age’s Canning Chapter has access to two three-wheeled rickshaw-type pedal bikes that are piloted by trained volunteers and runs every Friday from 9.30am – 11.30am from Kent Street Weir.
The trishaws are currently on loan from other Chapters, however with further funding the Canning Chapter is looking to secure its own permanent trishaw which will be housed in the area.
City of Canning Mayor Patrick Hall said the Canning Chapter’s route travels through the Canning River Regional Park and is a great community service to foster connection, social inclusivity and overall wellbeing.
“The service to the community provided voluntarily by Cycling Without Age cannot be understated and I’m so pleased to see them commencing their operations right here at Kent Street Weir,” Mayor Hall said.
“Any initiative aimed at improving and enhancing the lives of our senior residents should be applauded and I hope that residents take the opportunity to engage with the volunteers at Cycling Without Age and take advantage of this wonderful free community service.”
Cycling Without Age Captain for Canning Leanne Robb said the program provides opportunities for social interaction and benefits both passengers and volunteers.
“I love riding my bicycle and volunteering with Cycling Without Age allows me to share the joy of cycling with others unable to pedal themselves. To see the smiles on the faces of our passengers ‘feeling the wind in their hair’ and enjoying the outdoors is very rewarding,” Leanne said.
Cycling Without Age was established in Denmark in 2012 and is represented in 42 countries around the world today.
