MATE - Making Aquatics a Terrific Experience

The City of Canning launched its MATES program at Riverton Leisureplex in July 2016. The program optimises health and wellness opportunities for people with medical conditions and disabilities.

MATE program is hosted at Riverton Leisureplex – a location specially designed to be accessible for people of all abilities. Sessions are held on a Sunday from 12.00pm until 1.00pm during the school terms, and the costs $3.00 per participant.  MATE provides carers information, confidence and skills to take the person with a medical condition or disability into the water to join the lesson.  Aquatic activity promotes a sense of well-being, maximises body function and independence, and increases self-esteem.

Emma Cheney has been volunteering her time to run this program since it commenced in 2016.  “It has been great to see the people coming to the MATE program each week and just having a great time in the water. It’s all about creating that space where people can come into the pool with a carer or family member and have a positive experience in the water.”
