To help our residents have healthier and happier lives, we’ve developed plans to improve health outcomes within our community.

The City of Canning has endorsed its first Public Health Plan, which focuses on a healthy, liveable, and socially connected community for all.

The Armadale, Canning, Gosnells Alcohol Action Plan is the first of its kind in the state to tackle alcohol-related harm across three metropolitan local government areas and sets the agenda for action on three priority areas for the period of 2019-2022.

Resources

To help the community lead healthier lives, we’ve put together this list of helpful health resources. These resources are from local organisations like Livelighter, Cancer Council, and the Department of Health, and were developed to help the Western Australian (WA) community improve their health and wellbeing.

To help reduce your risk from drinking alcohol, the National Health and Medical Research Council recommend no more than two standard drinks per day.

Being active is important for your physical wellbeing.

Our Leisureplexes offer a wide range of physical activities, including swimming, fitness clubs (gyms), and group fitness classes.

The Whaleback Golf Course is provides an 18-hole golf course, a driving range, and coaching.

The Child and Adolescent Health Service provides parents with support, health education and guidance about key health and developmental issues.

The Community Child Health Program is available for all Western Australian families. The program offers families:

  • 5 child health (‘purple book’) appointments
  • a School Entry Health Assessment when your child starts school
  • parenting groups
  • referrals to other child health services if needed.

There are also different groups that parents can attend to support them through various stages of their child’s development. These include introducing solids to babies, strategies to help babies sleep, as well as programs to help support parents to have healthy relationships with children. Where can I get immunised?

You can get immunisations from your:

  • doctor
  • local immunisation clinic
  • local government (not all offer this service)
  • Aboriginal community health services
  • central immunisation clinic
  • travel immunisation clinic
  • pharmacies.

Much of the damage caused by smoking is reversible, and the earlier a person quits, the more chance their body has to repair itself.

The WA Health website has plenty of resources and advice to help those who want to quit smoking.

Make Smoking History

Make Smoking History is a Western Australian program to help smokers quit by providing guidance and support.

The program seeks to:

  • assist smokers to quit by providing them with information and resources to help plan their quit attempt
  • influence public opinion and policy on key smoking and health issues
  • raise awareness of the harms of smoking and the benefits of quitting.
