Cleaning Up the Canning works commence at Queens Park Basin!
Works are now underway at Queens Park Basin as part of the Cleaning Up the Canning initiative, funded under Round One of the Australian Government’s Urban Rivers and Catchments Program.
The project will enhance the existing basin into a constructed wetland within the Canning Plains Catchment. The purpose of the works is to establish riparian and aquatic habitat, improve water quality and hydrology and enhance community green space.
Once complete, the constructed wetland will act as a biofiltration system to help remove nutrients and pollutants from stormwater runoff before it enters downstream waterways. The design also increases the basin’s capacity to better manage water flows during rainfall events.
Current construction activities include the clearing of non-native vegetation, the excavation of the basin and drainage modifications. These works are required to improve flood capacity and prepare the site for future revegetation.
During this stage of the project, the community may notice temporary impacts such as increased noise, dust and changes to access around the basin. These impacts are expected during active construction periods. The City of Canning appreciates the community’s patience while these works are carried out.
Following construction, the site will be landscaped and revegetated with native species. Revegetation will support the establishment of riparian and aquatic habitat, improve biodiversity and contribute to improved water quality over time.
The City will continue to provide updates as the project progresses and key milestones are reached.
-
March to May 2026 – Construction works
Current works include the removal of exotic non-native vegetation, excavation of material and drainage works. These activities prepare the site for wetland construction, landscaping and revegetation with native species.
-
June and July 2026 – Landscaping and revegetation
Once construction is complete, the area will be landscaped and revegetated with native species to support habitat, biodiversity and improved water quality.
-
September 2026 – Project completion
