Canning City Centre

The City of Canning has committed to creating a vibrant City Centre – we say Perth’s Southern CBD. We will achieve this through the implementation of a robust environmental, social and economic platform.

The revitalised City Centre with a rejuvenated streetscape for Cecil Avenue will anchor the area with a mixed-use and a pedestrian-friendly tree lined street. Incorporating an inviting space for people of all ages, backgrounds and professions, new streetscapes and a vibrant public realm will create a more diverse and vital City Centre, both day and night.

The City Centre will feature high density residential accommodation in desirable locations near the train station and adjoining Westfield Carousel, which significantly increased its retail space in late 2018. Adding a level of energy to the area and helping to bring the space to life, the expansion of Westfield Carousel is a significant factor in shaping the success of the City Centre.

The $76m City Centre Regeneration Program is expected to deliver 10,000 new homes for 25,000 new residents, resulting in economic benefits of up to $2.2 billion in gross value, while giving the area a long awaited ‘heart’ by:

  • Connecting the Cannington train station to the river by creating a pedestrian link through the City Centre
  • Delivering greater vibrancy day and night by creating a Transit Orientated Development near the train station and through the expansion of the Westfield Carousel shopping centre
  • Providing greater diversity of use, employment and accessibility
  • Featuring a new Market Square, Multicultural Street Market and Train Station Square

Cecil Avenue Upgrades

The Cecil Avenue transformation is a key component of the Canning City Centre Regeneration Program, the City's long-term vision to create a vibrant, connected and sustainable city centre at the heart of Perth's Southern CBD.

Additional works

Phase 2 of the Canning City Centre Regeneration Program included the Lake Street Extension project, which delivers a new connecting road from Cecil Avenue to Wharf Street. The new road:

  • provides a direct link between Cannington Leisureplex and Cecil Avenue
  • promotes the viability and accessibility of the Leisureplex
  • provides direct access from the Leisureplex to the heart of the City centre and Carousel shopping centre.

To increase public open space in the Canning City Centre, the City converted Water Corporation’s existing drain on Lake Street Cannington into an urban stream.

The City of Canning engaged LD Total to work on the Lake Street Urban Stream Project, which transformed the drain into a new urban linear park designed for local residents, visitors and wildlife. Lake Street Urban Stream compliments other surrounding projects such as the award winning Wharf Street Basin Next Generation Park, Cecil Avenue West and East smart streets, plus the upcoming Lake Street Extension.

The urban stream:

  • mimics a natural waterway and remove pollutants from stormwater
  • is a new open public space
  • is a key entry way into Canning’s City Centre
  • provides a pedestrian link from Lake Street to Cecil Avenue.

Key highlights of the Lake Street Urban Stream design include:

  • retention of luscious greenery of trees, pockets of native reeds
  • the addition of native trees, shrubs and plants to increase vibrancy and wild life
  • a beautiful boardwalk, lookout and exposed concrete path to provide a connection to the local train station and surrounding shops
  • the addition of furniture to create active and vibrant public spaces for the community to interact and connect with each other.
