A creative space for crafters, makers and tinkerers

The City of Canning’s Makerspace is set to reopen at Riverton Library on Saturday 4 October, welcoming the community back to a vibrant hub for creativity, learning, and collaboration.

Residents are invited to join the celebrations between 10am and 1pm, with demonstrations on the CRICUT, laser cutter and 3D printers, example projects, as well as balloons and popcorn.

Previously a temporary fixture, this innovative space now has a dedicated permanent home at Riverton Library providing the community with access to equipment for 3D printing, laser cutting, sewing, crafting and electronics.

The City’s aspiration for the Makerspace is to help build a community of makers who can share their skills, encourage peer-to-peer learning and inspire one another.

The Makerspace will be open for public use Monday to Saturday for people aged 16 and over. Adults who have completed an induction may also bring children aged 12 to 15 into the space, provided they are supervised at all times.

Mayor Patrick Hall encourages the community to come down and check out this innovative space.

“Riverton Library is one of only a handful of local government-run libraries in Perth offering this type of facility, highlighting the City’s ongoing commitment to innovation and community engagement.

“The Makerspace is a fantastic resource for anyone interested in crafting, designing, or experimenting with new ideas.

“With access to a wide range of tools and materials, it’s a place where creativity can thrive, I encourage the community to come along and explore what’s on offer,” said Mayor Hall.

Residents will need to be a member of Riverton Library to use the Makerspace, and inductions are required for some of the equipment.

For beginners, Library staff or volunteers may be available to provide support, however self-directed learning is promoted. There will also be planned activations throughout the year to help promote community learning.
