Canning’s circular vision celebrated at the WasteSorted Awards 2025

Last Thursday night the City of Canning won the Local Government Award for their submission, Repair and Reuse: Fostering a Circular Canning, at the annual WasteSorted Awards 2025.

The WasteSorted Awards celebrate Western Australians who are leading the way towards a low-waste future through improved waste practices and innovative waste solutions.

The City of Canning’s submission, Repair and Reuse: Fostering a Circular Canning, highlights its commitment to driving repair and reuse initiatives that empower the community to embrace a circular economy.

Repair-focused activities include the City’s repair service rebates, the facilitation of bi-monthly Repair Labs, and the creation of the online circular economy map which showcases local circular businesses and initiatives including repair service providers.

The City also champions reuse through several innovative initiatives, including Western Australia’s first on-demand donation collection service in partnership with Good Sammy, offering rebates for selected reusable products, and fostering a low-waste culture at all major City events by using reusable serveware.

These initiatives aim to minimise waste and remove barriers, encouraging the community to reuse and repair by reducing costs, addressing skills and information gaps, and enhancing convenience.
Mayor Patrick Hall said he is proud of the City’s efforts in reducing and reusing, and inspiring others to follow in their footsteps.

“The City is committed to creating a sustainable, low-waste future through fostering a local circular economy, and it’s great to see our Strategic Waste team recognised for the amazing work they do within the community.

“Through initiatives like Repair Labs and eco-rebates, we’ve found that accessible services and clear information empower residents to choose repair and reuse over replacement,” Mayor Hall said.

Key successes include the bi-monthly Canning Repair Lab recently celebrated two successful years, with over 400 items assessed since its inception and an overall successful repair rate of 85%, the 2024-25 major events season saw reuseable servewares reached over 22,000 people, and 200 reusable cups were introduced for staff-led events.

The City has continued to grow its impact through expanding the eco-rebates to include extra categories for repair services in 2025-26. These include textiles, footwear, furniture, and electronic
appliances – enabling residents to claim support for multiple repairs and receive greater financial support.

This submission was also a finalist in the Community Events and Engagement category at the WasteSorted Awards 2025.
