The City of Canning is set to reopen various sections of its Cannington Leisureplex, following eight months of extensive renovations to a facility that is 13 years old.
From Thursday 18 September, customers will be able to enjoy upgraded male, female and family/accessible changerooms adjacent to the pool, featuring brand new showers, toilet cubicles, and an adult change bed to better support people with high care needs.
The new showers are equipped with manual temperature controls and water-saving timers, helping users easily set their preferred temperature while also reducing unnecessary water use. Shower sensors have also been installed to further improve efficiency and sustainability.
The upgrades came at a cost of $1.87 million to the City of Canning, and were required to modernise what had become an ageing facility.
“The new changerooms look terrific, and I must compliment the contractors on a job well done,” said City of Canning Mayor Patrick Hall, who was joined by Deputy Mayor Mark Bain for a walk through of the new facilities on Monday morning. “Our Leisureplexes are important community assets that welcome over 1.5 million visitors every year, and we will continue to ensure that they remain up to the standard expected by our residents. I am sure that visitors will be very pleased by what they see.”
Other improvements, completed at the same time, include an upgraded First Aid room and structural and cosmetic repairs to the tiled wall in the concourse area.
The Centre’s Wellness Suite - featuring the sauna, spa, and steam room - was temporarily closed on weekdays throughout the renovation period. With the upgrades now complete, the Suite will resume its regular operating hours. During this time, the City also carried out maintenance on the sauna, including repairs and the sanding and sealing of the bench seating.
The City of Canning is also investing into the renovation of the Riverton Leisureplex, the first major works since the leisure centre opened in 2001. These works include the renovations of the Wellness Suite, accessible changerooms, and the addition of new poolside family/accessibility changeroom, showers and change cubicles.
These upgrades are expected to be completed in the coming months. Later this month, the City of Canning will also be upgrading the air-conditioning system that serves the Bill Cole Room, FIIT Factory and Reception area at Riverton Leisureplex.
