City of Canning Welcomes former WA Auditor General Colin Murphy PSM as Inaugural Independent Chair of Audit and Risk Committee

The City of Canning is pleased to announce the appointment of Mr Colin Murphy PSM as the first Independent Chair of Audit and Risk Committee, following recent reforms to the Local Government Act introduced by the State Government.
These reforms require the Chair of the Committee to be an independent person, rather than an elected member. Mayor Patrick Hall, who has served on the Committee for almost 10 years and as Chair for the past six years, will continue as a member.
A long-time Canning resident, Mr Murphy is a highly respected leader in public service, known nationally for his expertise in governance and financial accountability. He served more than a decade as Auditor General for Western Australia and brings a wealth of experience, local knowledge and a strong commitment to the community.
The Committee oversees the City’s financial reporting, risk management, internal controls and audit processes. It plays a vital role in ensuring transparency, safeguarding public resources and maintaining community trust. The Committee also benefits from the expertise of Ms Elsie Lee, an Independent Member who has served for more than six years and was recently appointed as Deputy Chair. Her professional experience supports the City’s commitment to good governance.
Mayor Hall said the appointment marked an important step in strengthening the City’s governance under the new legislation.
“After almost six years as Chair of the Audit and Risk Committee, I could not be leaving the position in better hands,” Mayor Hall said.
“Colin’s reputation speaks for itself, but it’s his personal connection to Canning that makes this appointment so special. He understands our community because he’s part of it – walking his dog along the same paths, shopping at the same places and sharing the same pride in where we live. I will remain on the Committee as a member and look forward to working with Colin and the rest of the Committee to ensure the City remains one our residents can have complete confidence in.”
Mr Murphy said he was eager to combine his professional expertise with his passion for the local area.
“I’ve lived here for many years and have always admired the dedication of those who serve our community,” Mr Murphy said. “This role gives me the opportunity to give back in a meaningful way, to work alongside Council, the executive team and the talented members of the Committee, including Mayor Hall and Ms Lee, and to help make sure our governance remains strong, transparent and ready for the future.”
Mr Murphy’s appointment reflects the City’s commitment to sound financial management, accountability and continuous improvement for the benefit of its community.
