Is your child ready to swim without a swim nappy?
05 September 2025

With summer just around the corner, many parents start thinking about toilet training, and the question often comes up: “When can my child go nappy-free in the pool?”

The answer depends on a few important milestones that ensure your child is ready, confident, and comfortable.

1. Fully Toilet Trained

The most important step is that your child is fully toilet trained. They should be able to:

  • Recognise when they need to go
  • Tell you clearly
  • Hold it until they reach a toilet

Your child should even be able to let you know during a swim class that they need the toilet.

2. Accident-Free in the Pool

Being toilet trained at home is one thing, but the pool is a new environment

How can you tell if your child is consistently dry in the pool? Swim nappies will always feel wet from the pool water, so you can’t rely on touch alone. Instead, make sure your child uses the toilet before getting in, watch for cues like fidgeting or asking to go, and track how they manage over several lessons. If they stay accident-free during and after sessions, it’s a good sign they’re ready to try swimming without a nappy.

3. Able to Handle Distractions

Pools are full of sights, sounds, and activities, which can be distracting for little ones. Even toilet-trained toddlers might have an accident if they get too caught up in the fun. Your child should be able to stay aware and excuse themselves when needed.

Tips for a Smooth Transition

  • Start small: try short swim sessions nappy-free first
  • Encourage your child to speak up when they need the toilet
  • Celebrate every success and be patient with accidents

When your child is fully toilet trained, consistently accident-free in the pool, and can handle the distractions of a busy environment, they’re ready to dive in, and enjoy the freedom of swimming nappy-free!

Swimming nappy-free is a big milestone, and with the right timing and encouragement, it can make pool time more fun for both you and your little swimmer.
