Upgrade to Wyong Reserve and Ferndale Park pavilions
The City of Canning Council has approved two exciting new projects, totalling almost $12 million, aimed at upgrading ageing sporting facilities in the City. Pavilions at Ferndale Park and Wyong Reserve will undergo major improvements aimed at future proofing the sites, promoting gender equity, and strengthening community participation in sport and recreation.
The upgrades to Ferndale Pavilion, due to launch in April, will feature new gender-neutral changerooms, a social hall with amenities, new storage areas, upgraded accessibility provisions and improved viewing access to all three playing fields. Along with the upgrades to the Pavilion, the City will also be making improvements to the surrounding landscape, and a new car park, with further works currently being considered for oval reorientation for improved viewing of the sports field and lighting upgrades in future years.
The City’s contribution of $7.2 million to both projects is supported by significant funding from the State Government in the form of a Community Sporting and Recreation Facilities Fund (CSRFF) grant of $1,966,913 from the Department of Cultural Industries, Tourism and Sport. A further $2 million is expected through an election commitment from the member for Cannington Ron Sao MLA, as part of PlayOn WA, the WA Government's exciting initiative to deliver 2,030 community infrastructure items across WA by 2030.
The upgrades to the Merv McIntosh Pavilion at the Wyong Reserve in Bentley will launch in April and will deliver inclusive new change rooms with improved quality, accessibility and functionality of the sporting facilities.
The upgraded pavilion will provide modern social spaces that better support local clubs and community use. Wyong Park is currently home to the Bentley Cricket Club, Canning South Perth Football Club (Australia football) and the Royals Sporting Club (softball). This project received a CSRFF grant of $800,000.
“We need to meet the evolving needs of the community to ensure that our assets remain inclusive, safe and fit-for-purpose,” explained City of Canning Mayor Patrick Hall. “While there will some short-term disruptions as we upgrade the pavilions, I look forward to seeing our wonderful sporting clubs thriving in the new, modern facilities that overlook their playing fields.
"We are extremely grateful for the support of the State Government in helping to get these two projects off the ground and, in doing so, ensuring that the City of Canning provides modern community infrastructure that meets the needs of the community now and into the future."
