Swimming pool or spa barrier requests
Swimming pool and spa requests, including barrier complaints and decommissioning of pools.
While City officers will visit the site at the first opportunity possible, the City can only guarantee a response within one day. As the complainant you have a Duty of Care obligation to take action and make the area as safe as possible.
For guidance on managing your pool or spa, please refer to the Building Commission's Rules for Pools and Spas information sheet.
What is the role of local government?
- Local government, as the permit authority, is responsible for granting building permits for swimming and spa pools and their associated barriers.
- The approval process ensures that the building and barrier standards are satisfied.
- Pools are registered with the local government so that periodic inspections of the installed barrier can occur.
- Inspections should occur at intervals not exceeding four years. However, the City's inspection process will likely result in inspections occurring prior to the four year time-frame.
Decommissioning pools
For information on decommissioning pools, please refer to the Decommissioning and/or Removal of Swimming Pools or Spas information sheet.
To arrange an inspection for a decommissioned pool or if you have further questions about the process, please contact us on 1300 422 664.

Issues with neighbours
People are sometimes unaware that their activities are causing a problem. The City encourages all residents and business operators to talk to their neighbours about problems before making a complaint. Visit the resolving disputes with neighbours page for more information.
