Canning celebrates 80 years of Children’s Book Week

The City of Canning will celebrate 80 years of Children’s Book Week® from 16 – 23 August, taking young readers on a journey, with a range of free events for kids of all ages at Canning Libraries.
This year’s theme, Book an Adventure, encourages young readers to explore, imagine and discover the joy of reading through fun storytelling sessions, inspiring author talks, and creative hands-on workshops.
Join local author Lorraine Horsley at Riverton Library on Monday 18 August from 3.30pm – 4.30pm, for a special Book Week presentation. Author of The Magic Lunch Box, No Manners Milly, and When You Left, Lorraine will chat about her journey to becoming a published author and share secrets on how to create exciting writing adventures.
Award winning Perth Author, Kate Emery, will also be at Riverton Library on Wednesday 20 August from 4pm – 5pm for a fun, interactive talk on sparking ideas and writing captivating stories.
Other highlights include Rebecca Palmer’s Art Workshop, Gabriel Evans’ Illustration Workshop, Kristy Nita Brown’s Musical Storytelling and Stories Through Jewellery, and Tamara Moss’ Mythical Creature Workshop.
For the little ones, Rhymes and Stories will also feature on the list of family-friendly activities throughout the week at Willetton, Riverton and Cannington Libraries.
Mayor Hall said Children’s Book Week plays an important role in inspiring our younger generation to discover the joy of reading.
"Children’s Book Week continues to play a vital role in igniting a love of reading among our younger generation. It opens doors to endless worlds of imagination, discovery, and learning.
“This year marks the 80th anniversary of Children’s Book Week—a milestone for the Children’s Book Council of Australia. It’s a remarkable celebration of the joy of storytelling and highlights the importance of making reading accessible for all,” said Mayor Hall.
This year the City will also be giving children the opportunity to collect stickers and win fun Book Week prizes. Attend three events and collect three stickers to receive a Children’s Book Week Pen. Attend five events and collect five stickers to go into the draw to win one of ten Children’s Book Week tote bags to be drawn at the end of the week.
Book Week activities at Canning Libraries are supported by The Department of Creative Industries, Tourism and Sport, and the Children's Book Council of Australia (CBCA).
All events are free and open to the public, however there are a limited number of tickets for each event, therefore bookings are essential.
