What is happening at Whaleback Golf Course?
The entire irrigation system at Whaleback Golf Course will be replaced to improve water efficiencies.
Why is this work being done?
The current irrigation is 40 years old and an upgrade is needed for the system to be more sustainable. Once complete, the new irrigation is expected to be more adaptable to severe weather conditions and help achieve greener, more consistent surfaces in all playable areas of the course.
The City hopes the irrigation works will see Whaleback Golf Course achieve Waterwise status - an accreditation awarded by the Golf Course Superintendents Association of Western Australia and the Department of Water for the efficient and sustainable use of water in irrigated spaces.
When is this work taking place?
To minimise disruptions, work will be executed in three phases and the following closures will be in place:
6 September – 22 October
- Back nine holes (holes 10 – 18) closed
Holes 1 - 9 remain open
25 October – 9 December
- Front nine holes (holes 1 – 9) closed
Holes 10 - 18 remain open
15 – 17 December
- Driving range closed
Holes 1 - 18 remain open
Can I still play golf?
Yes. During the works there will be nine holes available at all times.
Online prepaid bookings will open six days in advance, with phone bookings open two days in advance with payment on the day.
Booking sheet opens daily at 8:00am. Phone 9457 8999.
Can I play 18 holes?
You can book 2 x 9 holes back-to-back. You will be charged the rate of 2 x 9 holes.
Can I still use the driving range?
Yes, from 6 September - 14 December. The driving range won't be operational 14 - 17 December.
When will the whole golf course be operational?

What you say
"Would you please pass on my congratulations to your greenkeepers and ground staff on the great job they're doing with Whaleback at the moment. The clearing of the undergrowth surrounding the fairways has made a huge difference to the look of the course - not to mention finding any lost balls much easier. Since coring the greens they have come up really well and can be quite a challenge sometimes. My friends and I always enjoy our time there - just wish our putting was a bit better!" Loraine Taylor
