Our program

Little Water Bubs Logo

Take pleasure in your baby’s first aquatic experience in the warm soothing waters of the Riverton Leisureplex Program Pool. Enjoy those precious bonding moments with lots of skin-on-skin contact, singing and splashing!

Little Water Bubs is Canning Swim School's introductory swimming lessons program for babies aged between three and six months. We believe that positive early learning experiences will lead to a child's life long love of water. Our dedicated and experienced staff will gently nurture you and your precious infant through a memorable 30 minute class, with up to six babies per class.

Skills are introduced gradually and never forced on crying babies. Infants acquire skills at their own rate and we will never push them beyond their ability. Happy, confident babies are the rule!

Want to swim with your friends? We can create a class for your Mother's Group! For more information, please contact Canning Swim School on 1300 422 664 or via email.

Helpful Hints

  • Please wait for instructions from your teacher before entering and exiting the water
  • For classes in the Riverton Leisureplex Program Pool, access is allowed 10 minutes prior to your lesson, which allows time to change your baby
  • We do not recommend feeding your baby immediately prior to your swimming lesson
  • Health regulations prevent babies from entering the spa due to high water temperatures
  • Swimwear can be a swim nappy or bathers that are tightly fitting around the leg. Suitable swimwear is available to purchase from main reception
  • Please do not remove swimwear in the water. Always dispose of wet nappies in the bins provided
  • If a toileting accident occurs, infants should be immediately removed from the water and thoroughly washed before returning to their lesson
  • Please do not swim if your baby is unwell
  • Your teacher will educate you on the safe practices of submersions. Please do not continually submerge your infant as this can lead to hyponatremia (water intoxication). Submersions are only done when an infant shows signs of "readiness"
  • Young infants may not shiver when they are cold. Signs that may indicate your baby is cold include: loss of body colour, unsettled behaviour, lack of interest, lethargy and tiredness
  • Praise your infant for attempting a task even if the task was not performed perfectly. This will boost their confidence and encourage trying new activities
  • During Safety Week you get the chance to practice a water safety swim and reach rescue
  • Most importantly, have fun and enjoy your swimming lessons!

Water familiarisation classes encourage you to praise, reassure and applaud your baby's natural curiosity.

We believe that positive early learning experiences will lead to a child's life long love of water. Our dedicated and experienced staff will gently nurture you and your precious infant through a memorable 30 minute class, with up to eight babies per class. A strong emphasis is placed on ensuring both you and your child are instructed on how to be water wise and safe in and around the water. Water familiarisation classes at the centre encourage you to praise, reassure and applaud your baby's natural curiosity.

Through play and song, babies kick and float, exploring the water's buoyancy which acts like an invisible helping hand.

Lifesaving and Rescue Awards

These awards focus on skill development accompanied by judgment and initiative.  A continuation from Riverton's school age curriculum, Swim and Survive provides a broad, balanced program of swimming, water safety and survival skills. The program builds confidence and endurance. These stages will be run in conjunction with the Junior Lifeguard Club.

Junior Lifeguard Club

8 swimmers per class

Our Junior Lifeguard Club offers a unique opportunity for students to combine their swimming with lifesaving knowledge and put both in to practice within classes.  Students will complete the required skills to achieve their current stage. We run social events and participate in carnivals with other Junior Lifeguard teams.

Junior Swim & Survive: Stage 10
Swim & Survive: Stage 11
Senior Swim & Survive: Stage 12
Wade Rescue: Stage 13
Accompanied Rescue: Stage 14
Bronze Levels: Stages 15, 16, 17

Some of our Junior Lifeguard Club members have progressed to obtain their Pool Lifeguard qualification when they turn 16 and are now employed as Lifeguards.

We recognise the need to treat teenagers – not as the children they were – but as the young adults they are becoming.

Our experienced teachers understand that no teenager would be comfortable learning how to swim in a beginners’ class with much younger children.

Our teenage program is designed for students aged 12 – 18 years and focuses on water confidence, safety practices and stroke development:
• Teen Beginner: learning to be safe and confident in the water
• Teen Intermediate: learning the fundamentals of key strokes
• Teen Advanced: learning stroke development and efficiency
Our monthly squad program is based at Riverton Leisureplex and encompasses all levels of swimming, from junior development through to competitive national age swimmers. We also offer a teenage fitness program for youth aged 13 years and over. Click here for more information.

Parents and children have the opportunity to learn to swim together in a safe and comfortable environment.

Lessons are tailored to your family's individual needs and skill level.

This program is designed for four family members, all over the age of 3 years:

1 parent and 3 children or;

2 parents and 2 children

Family swimming lessons are term based and cost $171.00 per person, with lessons running for 45 minutes.

Contact Canning Swim School via email to schedule a family swimming lesson.

Canning Swim School offers a range of private and one-on-one lessons for children and adults with special needs. Private Special Needs lessons are arranged on a term basis and can be tailored to an individual's requirements. Access to both pools can be provided via the aqua wheelchair and hoist access.
