Greenfield Street Bridge Replacement
The Greenfield Street Footbridge was first built in the early 1960s over the Canning River, between Cannington and Ferndale. It connects shared paths on both sides of the river and is part of a secondary route within the Department of Transport’s Long-Term Cycle Network.
It is well used by the community to commute to and from the Canning City Centre for education, work, health services and other commercial and community services. It is also used by the community for recreational purposes around the Canning River Regional Park.
Regular inspections of Greenfield Street Footbridge over recent years have identified deterioration of both structural and tertiary components of the bridge. The existing footbridge is now considered close to the end of its useful life and therefore needs to be closed to ensure the safety of people who use it.
The objective of this project is to replace the existing footbridge with a new one that is:
- wider
- safer
- fit-for-purpose as a shared path
- reduces ongoing maintenance costs
- aesthetically suited to the Canning River Regional Park.
The project scope includes:
- decommissioning and removing the existing footbridge
- constructing new piers, set further back from the river water
- constructing a new bridge
- revegetating the area near the new footbridge that is impacted during the works.
