Economic Development and Advocacy

The City of Canning plays an active role in growing the local economy, attracting investment and advocating for the conditions that allow businesses to thrive.

This page explains the City's economic development work and how businesses and investors can engage with it.

Our economic development role

Growing the City of Canning's economy and supporting the businesses and investors that drive it is a priority for the City. We have a dedicated Business and Economic Development team that works directly with businesses and investors to support growth, build capability and drive investment into Canning.

Beyond direct business support, the City actively represents the interests of its business community to State and Federal Government, industry bodies and other stakeholders, working to ensure Canning remains competitive and well positioned for future economic growth.

Key economic development initiatives

Canning City Centre Regeneration

The City is actively investing in the regeneration of the Cannington City Centre, positioning it as Perth's southern CBD. The program encompasses environmental, social and economic initiatives designed to create a vibrant, activated urban centre that supports business growth, attracts investment and improves amenity for workers, residents and visitors.

METRONET

The City has been an active advocate for METRONET investment in the southern corridor. New stations at Nicholson Road and Ranford Road will improve public transport access across the City, supporting workforce connectivity for businesses and increasing the attractiveness of Canning as a business location.

Westport

The City is actively monitoring and advocating on the development of Westport, Western Australia's future container port at Kwinana. The transition to Westport is expected to significantly increase freight activity through Canning's transport corridors and the City is working to ensure its industrial precincts and logistics businesses are well positioned for this opportunity.

CCIWA Industry Sector Analysis

The City commissioned the Chamber of Commerce and Industry WA to produce a detailed analysis of Canning's leading industry sectors, published in March 2026. This work provides the evidence base for the City's economic development strategy and investment attraction activities. Key findings are summarised on the Industry Sectors and Opportunities page.

Advocacy and partnerships

The City works with a range of organisations to advocate for the interests of Canning's business community and to build the conditions for long-term economic growth. Key partnerships include:

  • Chamber of Commerce and Industry WA (CCIWA) – industry advocacy, economic analysis and business support programs
  • Freight and Trade Alliance – advocacy for freight, trade and logistics businesses
  • Western Roads Federation – representation for road freight and logistics operators
  • Logistics Skills Council – workforce development and skills planning for the logistics sector
  • Supply Chain and Logistics Association of Australia (SCLAA) – industry networks and professional development for supply chain businesses

The City also engages with State and Federal Government agencies on matters including transport infrastructure, industrial land planning, workforce development and investment attraction.
