The City of Canning has secured $350,000 from the Australian Government to upgrade the alfresco areas at Hillview Intercultural Community Centre.

The project will improve the quality, accessibility and functionality of the Centre's outdoor spaces, giving the more than 100 community groups who use Hillview each year a shaded, well-lit alfresco area they can use across the full year, alongside power and staging improvements inside the main hall.

Key elements of the project include:

  • New shade sails, landscaping and paving to the alfresco area
  • New external entry lighting
  • Wrap-around theatre curtains to the main hall
  • Switchboard replacement and two new 3-phase power supplies to the stage and alfresco area
  • Structural works supporting the shade sail connections and ceiling framing

Design documentation completes in March 2027, tendering runs to July 2027, and construction is scheduled from August 2027 to January 2028, with practical completion in April 2028.

This investment will lift the Centre's capacity to host cultural performances, youth activities and larger community events, and remove a stage power limitation that has prevented Hillview from hosting mid-scale touring productions since it opened.
