Canning coming together to celebrate this Australia Day
11 January 2024

The City of Canning is giving Canning residents a reason to come together and celebrate this Australia Day, Friday 26 January, at the City’s annual Family Fun Day at Shelley Beach foreshore.

From 9am to 2pm, residents are invited to come along with their families, and by families that means the family dog as well, and celebrate all the things we love about Australia.

This free to enter Australia Day event is supported by National Australia Day Council and kicks off with a Citizenship Ceremony, followed by a Welcome to Country and Smoking Ceremony.

The day will feature loads of activities including a puppy parade, doggy adventure course, pet friendly photo booth, craft activities, face painting, sporting pop ups for the kids, big kahuna water slide for the older kids, inflatable rainbow mister for the littlies, stage shows, stallholders and much more.

Residents can either bring their own rug and picnic food, or there will be food trucks offering a diverse range of cuisines, with food and refreshments available for purchase.

Winners of the Auspire Community Citizen of the Year Awards will also be announced on the day recognising some outstanding contributions from local Canning residents.

Mayor Patrick Hall said the Family Fun Day provides Canning’s diverse community with an opportunity to come together and celebrate this fantastic country we live in.

“The City of Canning is remarkably diverse, from our Whadjuk Noongar heritage to our new arrivals, it is a place where we pride ourselves on having a vibrant, safe and inclusive community, and this event reflects that.”

“This year we will also be celebrating those who have made a significant contribution to the local community, by announcing the winners of the Auspire Community Citizen of the Year Awards at the event.

“It’ll be great to see Shelley Foreshore filled with Canning families, including the furry family members, celebrating all the things we love about Australia and enjoying a fun filled day of entertainment”, Mayor Hall said.

Patrons are encouraged to bring their own keep cups and reusable waters bottles. This is a dog friendly event, however dogs must be on a lead at all times.

There will be free onsite parking however as parking is limited, people are encouraged to carpool or take public transport, or walk or ride a bike where possible and utilise the free bike racks at the event.
