Canning community invited to have its say on cat management

The City of Canning is inviting residents to have their say on cat management to inform the next review of the City of Canning’s Cat Local Law 2021.

The community is being asked to share their views on three curfew options being considered: a night-time curfew, a 24-hour curfew, or to continue the current approach which is no curfew.

City of Canning Mayor Patrick Hall said the consultation was an opportunity for the whole community to have a say before Council considers any potential changes.

“We want to hear from Canning residents about their experiences and views on cat management, whether they own a cat or not.”

“There are a range of perspectives on this issue, and this consultation is about understanding what matters to our community before Council considers whether any changes to the City’s Local Law should be pursued.”

“Importantly, no decision has been made to introduce a cat curfew in Canning or amend the City’s Cat Local Law.”

The consultation is taking place in the context of proposed changes to the State Government’s Cat Act 2011, which may provide local governments with greater powers to make local laws relating to cat management.

The City’s consultation is separate from the State Government’s next review of the Cat Act 2011 and is focused specifically on community views that may assist the City of Canning in considering its own Cat Local Law.

The City is seeking feedback on domesticated cats through the YourSay platform - www.yoursaycanning.com.au/cat-management.
Residents are encouraged to take the time to understand the options, complete the survey and share their views on the potential cat management options, as well as any other aspects of the City’s existing Cat Local Law they would like considered.

Mayor Hall said community feedback would be an important part of understanding the views of Canning residents.

Community feedback will be analysed to identify key themes, concerns and priorities and will help inform any future advice to Council.
