City of Canning residents can get their hands on a free native tree this May, with the return of the City's popular Grow For It event.

On Sunday 3 May 2026 from 8am to 12pm, residents are invited to visit the Civic and Administration Centre at 1317 Albany Highway in Cannington to collect a free tree and native tube stock, while stocks last.

Nine native species will be available on the day, all suited to local growing conditions. Options include Slender Banksia, Red Flowering Gum, Silver Princess, Pincushion Hakea, Bottlebrush and a range of mallees. The Conservation team also have a range of native tube stock to give away until stocks last.

Mayor Patrick Hall said the annual giveaway was a practical way for residents to contribute to a greener, cooler city.

"Every tree planted in a Canning garden or verge helps shade our streets, support local wildlife and make our neighbourhoods more liveable," Mayor Hall said.

"We encourage residents to come along early, choose a species that suits their space and take home a tree that will benefit their property and the broader community for years to come."

The program supports the City's urban forest goals by increasing tree canopy across private properties. Greater canopy cover helps reduce urban heat, improve amenity and build climate resilience.

Staff will be on hand throughout the event to assist residents with plant selection, with team members also moving through the queue to offer guidance while people wait. The City will also be promoting its Significant Tree Register and Verge Incentive Program.

No registration is required. Trees and tube stock are allocated on a first come, first served basis and are limited to one per household. Residents should bring proof of address on the day.
