New playground opens at Canning Vale Oval

Children in Canning Vale have a new playground to enjoy, with works now complete at Canning Vale Oval.

The previous playground sat tucked away inside the fenced garden beside the pavilion and tennis courts. It served generations of local children well, but its equipment had reached the end of its life. Instead of rebuilding in the same corner, the City of Canning brought the playground out into the open parkland beside the oval, where the whole community can enjoy this new space.

Mature trees shade the play space through the warmer months, which means longer visits and fewer hot slides in summer. The new position also sits within easy reach of the oval, the pavilion and the walking paths, so a trip to the park stretches into an afternoon.

Local residents and students helped shape the design. Their ideas guided the choice of equipment and how the space works for different ages and abilities.

The City of Canning contributed $100,000 towards the $200,000 project through its playground renewal program. The State Government funded the other $100,000 through an Election Commitment Grant, administered by the Department of Local Government, Industry Regulation and Safety. Canning Vale Oval is one of five playground projects across Perth sharing $490,000 under the commitment.

Mr Stephen Pratt MLA, Member for Jandakot said:

“It’s fantastic to see this new playground at Canning Vale Oval officially open and ready for local families to enjoy.

“The Cook Labor government committed $100,000 towards this project because we know how important good local parks and playgrounds are for families and for bringing our community together.

“I’m really pleased we’ve been able to deliver on that commitment and work with the City of Canning to create something that Canning Vale families can enjoy for years to come.”

City of Canning Mayor Patrick Hall said the new playground reflects what the community asked for.

"We asked the community what they wanted here and they told us," Mayor Hall said.

"Shade came up again and again, along with a location out in the open where parents feel comfortable and children feel welcome.

"Playgrounds do a lot of quiet work in a suburb. They give families a reason to walk down the street, stay a while and get to know their neighbours."
