StreetSport scores big for Canning's youth
The City of Canning is excited to announce the launch of the Wanju Neighbourhoods StreetSport Program, a new community initiative designed to provide positive and engaging activities for young people aged 10-15 years living in the Queens Park and Bentley St James areas.
This program aims to provide young people with opportunities to participate in sports and skill-building sessions, while introducing them to local organisations that offer additional resources and support. Set to kick off in Term 4 of 2024 and continue into Term 2 of 2025, the StreetSport Program is made possible through the generous support of the Criminal Property Confiscation Grants program, provided by the Department of Justice.
Mayor Patrick Hall expressed his enthusiasm for the initiative, stating, "The StreetSport Program represents a fantastic opportunity for our young residents to develop skills, build friendships, and stay active. We are proud to support projects that provide our youth with positive alternatives and help them thrive within their communities."
He added, "This program would not have been possible without crucial funding from the Department of Justice, and we extend our thanks for their support. We look forward to seeing the positive impact this will have on young people living across Bentley and Queens Park."
The program will be delivered in partnership with Bentley Primary School, Football West, Perth Basketball Association, and WA Cricket, with additional support from WA Police, the Salvation Army, and Cannington headspace.
Department of Justice spokeswoman Kyalee Carey says the StreetSport Program is a worthy initiative aimed at getting young people engaged with the community.
“We look forward to seeing the program have a positive impact on the lives of young people by encouraging social interaction and helping them make better decisions.”
Parents and guardians are encouraged to register their children by emailing the Neighbourhood team at community@canning.wa.gov.au or by visiting the YourSay page for Bentley and St James or Queens Park. Additionally, there will be drop-in sessions available for parents and young ones to attend and complete their registrations.
