The City of Canning has broken ground on its ambitious $8 million Ferndale Park redevelopment project that will see major upgrades to the park’s pavilion, landscaping and parking areas.

“Ferndale Park is an important community asset used by sports clubs and community members, and it is essential that the City continues to invest in it, to ensure it remains modern, safe and fit for purpose,” explained Mayor Patrick Hall.

The upgrades to the Ferndale Pavilion will feature new gender-neutral changerooms, a social hall with amenities, new storage areas, upgraded accessibility provisions and improved viewing access to all three playing fields. Along with the upgrades to the Pavilion, the City will also be making improvements to the surrounding landscape, and a new car park, with further works currently being considered for oval reorientation for improved viewing of the sports field and lighting upgrades in future years.

Funding for the project, expected to be completed by early 2027, comes from the City of Canning, $1.96 million from the State Government, as part of its PlayOn WA initiative, and an election commitment of $2 million from Member for Cannington, Ron Sao.

“This investment will deliver modern changerooms, better social spaces and improved access so local clubs and families can make full use of Ferndale Reserve for years to come,” said Sao.

Construction business AE Hoskins will be responsible for the transformation of the pavilion, which is home to Lynwood Ferndale Football Club (Australian football), Ferndale Lynwood Cricket Club ,Canning Districts Hockey Club and Vic Park Masters Football Club.

“There will be some disruption over the coming months, as the new facilities take shape,” explained Mayor Hall.

“However, by early next year, the pavilion will look very different and the investment of today will go a long way towards promoting gender equality and strengthening community sporting participation in Canning for generations to come.

“I look forward to seeing our wonderful sporting clubs thriving in the new, modern facilities.

“We are extremely grateful for the support of the State Government and Ron Sao MLA in helping to get this project off the ground and, in doing so, ensuring that the City of Canning’s community infrastructure meets the needs of the community.”

PlayOn WA is a WA Government initiative that aims to deliver 2,030 community infrastructure items across WA by 2030.
