Community Citizen of the Year Awards 2024 now open!

The Community Citizen of the Year Awards recognise individuals and groups who make outstanding contributions to their city, town or shire. They may be involved in fundraising and volunteering within education, health, business, sport, the arts, the environment, social inclusion or any other area to the benefit and wellbeing of the local community. The Awards are given out at our Family Fun Australia Day event where the community joins together to celebrate its rich diversity and the people who contribute to making it what it is.
 

2022-2023 event season wrap up 

The 2022-2023 event season saw 19 events and activations delivered at 10 locations across the City. We are very grateful for all the community groups, organisations and event suppliers that helped us to bring these events to life. Local Bite Nights 2023
Friday 6 October 2023, 6.00pm - 9.00pm
East Cannington Park, East Cannington

 

Local Bite Nights is back this year in three locations across Canning. Local Bite Nights is the smaller pop-up version of it's big brother, Mid Week Eats and is designed to activate parks and spaces not regularly used for events and invite the community in. Each Local Bite Night will bring food trucks, kids entertainment and musical performances to bring the local community together on a no cook Friday. 

 


        


Canning Show 2023
Friday 3 November, 5.00pm - 9.00pm
Saturday 4 November, 9.00am - 4.00pm
Cannington Showgrounds 

The City will be present at the Canning Show again this year with interactive and engaging activations from our Libraries, Community Safety and Strategic Waste Teams. This year’s show theme is ‘Sheep and Wheat’, and with the launch of the new venue spaces at the Showgrounds, the 2023 event promises to be bigger and better than ever. Delivered by our friends at the Canning Agricultural, Horticultural & Recreational Society Inc (CAHRS), the Show offers a diverse range of entertainment for the community and beyond. Muddy Hands Festival 2023
Saturday 18 November, 10.00am - 3.00pm
Kent Street Weir, Wilson

The Muddy Hands Festival is an event to encourage children and families to enjoy active outdoor play and being amongst nature. Through unstructured messy mud play, this event is designed to engage children’s curiosity by letting them choose their own path with immersive experiences and hands on learning. It also aims to provide them a greater understanding on how to co-exist sustainably on this planet, with local flora, fauna, and the natural environment. The Muddy Hands Festival is a free event featuring mud pits, mud slides and mud kitchens, along with a huge array of have-a-go activities aimed at children 1-15yrs  (though big kids are welcome too!).

          

 


Carols By Candlelight 2023
Saturday 2 December, 5.30pm - 9.00pm
Civic Amphitheatre & Gardens, Cannington

Featuring the Canning City Brass Band, Rossmoyne Community Choir and Avenue Jazz Band along with a host of other special guests, attendees can singalong to carols and Christmas classics,  amidst the magical setting of our Civic Amphitheatre and Gardens. This year's free event will be extended to incorporate even more NEW entertainment and performances,  as well as a very special twist that the audience will love! So, attendees should bring their best singing voice and join the rest of the community to celebrate the silly season. With roving entertainment, kid's craft activities and delicious food trucks as well, this event will deliver all the festive feels and keep the kids entertained too!

     
         

 

 


New Year's Day Concert & Fireworks 2024

Shelley Beach Foreshore, Shelley

Celebrate the start of 2024 with a bang at the City's annual New Year's Day Concert and Fireworks event. Set against the stunning backdrop of the Canning River and overlooking the impressive City skyline, the Shelley Foreshore will come alive with an event that punches way above its weight on the 'funometer'. As always, our New Years Day Concert and Fireworks is a large family-friendly, free event offering big entertainment, big performances and big smiles. So, make sure this is firmly circled on the kitchen calendar and we will look forward to seeing you there!

       


        

 

 


Family Fun Day on Australia Day 2024

On Australia Day we celebrate all the things we love about Australia: the great outdoors, a sense of fair go, lifestyle and the diversity of our great nation. ⛱.
The City's Family Fun Day event on Australia Day is designed for the whole community with a strong doggy theme, so bring your family or friends and neighbors along for a morning to afternoon of fun by the Canning River at Shelley Beach Foreshore. Our 2024 event will have more dog friendly activations, stalls and fun than you can wag your tail at, as well as the pinnacle of every Cannington dog owners calendar - the City of Canning - 'Puppy Parade'.

If you're looking to inject a little rock and roll in to your normal weekday menu, then look no further than the City's month of Mid Week Eats! For the month of February we will run a foodie extravaganza every Thursday where you can take your taste buds on a one way ticket around the globe. Each week will have different themed cuisine and entertainment for visitors to indulge in along with plenty of space and activities for the kids. This event is free to enter and open to our community and beyond - including the family pooch. So loosen the belt buckle a few notches and leave plenty of room for the Month of Mid Week Eats!

          


     


Global Streets Festival 2024

A festival of Canning’s rich cultural diversity where food, people and customs are celebrated by the community, for the community. There will be a fantastic array of performers on the Global Streets Stage, plenty of activities for the kids, and lots of experiences for attendees to immerse themselves in to understand the cultures and traditions of their neighbours.

ANZAC Day March & Service
Thursday 25 April 2024, 7.30am - 10.00am
Civic Amphitheatre & Gardens, Cannington

Run in partnership with the Canning Sub-Branch of the Returned & Services League, the City will run an ANZAC Day march and services to commemorate our brave soldiers and their families. Featuring live musical performances, hymns, a Wreath Laying Ceremony, followed by refreshments, all the Community are welcome to attend.  This is a wonderful and moving event to attend from the march to the service so we hope to see you

 

 

Pioneers Tea
Wednesday 8 May 2024, 1.00pm - 3.30pm
Cannington Exhibition Centre, Cannington

Each year the City celebrates and thanks those who have lived in its boundaries for 50 years or more (consecutively). The 2024 event will be held at Cannington Showgrounds where guests will enjoy a free afternoon tea with nibbles, refreshments and live music. To be added to the 2024 invite list, please ring the City on 1300 422 664 and ask for the City Events Team.

Naidoc Week 2023 Art Exhibition

Riverton Library, Riverton

 

In recognition of NAIDOC Week 2023 the City hosted an Art Exhibition at Riverton Library as one of the many activities to celebrate the significance of this week in the national calendar. The event was free and showcased a variety of artworks from local artists including painting, drawing, sculpture and carving. The event was launched with a special morning tea to celebrate the artworks on display which was open to the community and participating artists.

Canning Art Awards Exhibition

Riverton Library, Riverton

 

The Canning Art Awards is a staple on the City's Major Events Calendar. It provides opportunities to upcoming artists aged 12yr+ to exhibit their work as well as a chance to share in a huge range of cash prizes. the Awards showcase some of WA's best artists, a number of which we are proud to say - are local to Canning. This professionally curated  exhibition provides viewers with a powerful show of high calibre and diverse artwork in a range of forms and categories. The event itself consists of an opening night and a free week long exhibition.

The City of Canning and Mayor Patrick Hall were very proud to announce the inaugural 2022 Camco Engineering - Mayor’s Charity Gala Dinner last year - the first time a Western Australian local government district has partnered with its business community to deliver a  gala civic event with a charitable purpose.The 2022 Camco Engineering - Mayor’s Charity Gala Dinner served as a fantastic opportunity to network with like-minded businesses on this fun, inspirational and momentous occasion while giving back to a local Canning charity - Good Sammy Enterprises.
