Crèche

Parents / guardians are required to stay on-site at either Cannington or Riverton Leisureplex and Cannington or Riverton Library while their children are in the crèche.

To ensure the wellbeing, safety, and comfort of all children in our care, parents or guardians may be contacted and asked to return to the crèche under the following circumstances:

• Excessive distress
  If your child becomes significantly distressed and cannot be comforted by crèche staff, or redirected through play experiences, for longer than 15 minutes, you will be asked to return to provide reassurance or to collect your child for the remainder of the session, if necessary.
• Signs of illness
  If a child shows symptoms of illness such as fever, vomiting, diarrhoea, rash, persistent coughing, or generally becomes unwell or has any illness from our list of conditions that require exclusion from creche, you will be asked to come and collect your child for the remainder of the session.
• Additional support required
  If a child has specific needs that cannot be safely supported in a group setting such as toileting accidents, nappy refusal, or needing ongoing one-on-one support that affects staff’s ability to care for the group you may be asked to return to provide support to your child or to collect your child for the remainder of the session, if necessary.
• Displays of conduct deemed unacceptable
  If a child displays conduct that is deemed unacceptable by our crèche staff such as hitting, biting, throwing objects, or ongoing challenges you may be asked to return. This helps us maintain a safe and caring environment for all children.

To maintain a safe and supportive environment, all children attending the crèche are expected to demonstrate appropriate conduct that does not place themselves, other children, or staff at risk.

Where a child displays conduct that is unsafe, aggressive, or persistently disruptive, staff will implement appropriate guidance strategies.

If the conduct continues or escalates:

• the child may be removed from the session
• parents / guardians may be contacted for collection
• creche access may be temporarily suspended while incidents are reviewed
• ongoing access may be subject to a conduct management plan
• continued or serious incidents may result in withdrawal of creche access.

All actions will be taken in the interest of safety and wellbeing. The City reserves the right to refuse or withdraw access where a child’s conduct presents an ongoing risk.

• An enrolment form must be completed for each child attending the Crèche.
• Immunisation records or a valid medical certificate must be provided in person at the child’s first active session in the creche. Enrolment will not be finalised until this documentation has been received and verified.
• We recommend immunising your child against preventable diseases to minimise the risk of infection. Non-immunised children will be excluded from care during an outbreak. Notifications of confirmed cases will be displayed on the front door, and parents of children who attended the session will be notified.
• If parents/guardians are unable to provide valid immunisation records, they must provide a current medical certificate confirming the child's good health, completed by a medical practitioner.

All bookings are made online through the OneBooking portal. Bookings are available from one day in advance, up to one week advance

How to Book

1. Select your site – use the drop-down menu to choose Riverton or Cannington.
2. Select Crèche and your booking type using the drop-down menus.
3. Select the date and session times.
4. Select Continue.
5. Check your booking times.
6. Select Book More if you need to make another booking.
7. Complete your booking:
   • For Casual bookings, select Add to Cart (Make payment)
   • For Leisureplex Premium, Swim School or 10 Entry Purchase, select Confirm Booking.
8. Check that you receive a booking confirmation to secure your child’s place.

Booking Allocation in Creche

Please ensure that all bookings are made for the full available time slot.

1. You may request an extension of up to 2 hours, subject to availability and confirmation.
2. Bookings must be made for consecutive time slots.
3. Split or overlapping bookings are not permitted.
4. Each booking should cover the full available time slot to ensure smooth scheduling and proper allocation of spaces in the Creche.

Booking Time Requirements

• Arrive 2–5 minutes before your booking. Early arrivals may be asked to wait.
• Late arrivals will not receive extra time. Children must be collected at the booked end time.
• Each session is a maximum of 2 hours.
• Children may attend the Creche for a maximum of 12 hours per week.

If you cannot attend your Creche session, please email us at least 1 hour before the session opens.

• Late cancellations and non-attendance are treated the same.
• This applies to the session opening time, not your individual booking time.
• An email reminder will be sent following a late cancellation or non-attendance.

Fees

• Casual: No refund or credit.
• 10 Entry: One Creche pass deducted per child.
• Complimentary: A fee equal to the casual Creche entry fee per child applies after the third recurring non-attendance.

Children must be collected by the end of their individual booking time.

• First occurrence: Verbal warning.
• Second occurrence: Verbal and written warning.
• Repeated late collections: A fee equal to the casual Creche entry fee per child will be charged and must be paid at collection.

Repeated late collections may result in additional fees or restrictions on Creche access.

1. Parents/guardians must sign their child in on arrival and out when leaving the Creche.
2. Parents/guardians must provide their location within the Leisureplex or Library while their child is in the Creche.
3. If someone else is collecting your child, please inform Creche staff. If the person is not listed on the enrolment form, provide their full name and a description. Photo ID will be required when they collect the child.
4. Before leaving the Creche, please check that you have all your belongings. If you leave something behind, Creche staff can assist you in retrieving it.

The Complimentary Crèche service is accessible to individuals with a Leisureplex Premium Membership and Canning Swim School customers. Here are the requirements:

For Leisureplex Premium Members:

• Must have an active membership.
• No outstanding payments.
• Your membership must be active to access complimentary creche. Complimentary visits will only be enabled after the start date membership.
• Membership sharing is not permitted; individuals holding Leisureplex Premium memberships cannot share access with others.

For Canning Swim School customers:

• Must have an active enrolment.
• Siblings and children of customers with active enrolments are entitled complimentary creche on the day of their swimming lesson.
• No outstanding payments.
• Your enrolment must be active to access complimentary creche. Complimentary visits will only be enabled after the start date active enrolment.

In an emergency, Creche staff may administer a child’s EpiPen, antihistamine or asthma medication when authorised by the parent/guardian and supported by a current written Medical Action Plan from a medical practitioner outlining the required procedure.

Emergency Medication Requirements

• EpiPen, antihistamine and asthma medication must be provided each time your child attends the Creche.
• Medication must be current and clearly labelled with the child’s details and handed directly to Creche staff on arrival.
• If the required medication is not provided or is expired, your child will not be able to attend the Creche.

Asthma and Anaphylaxis Incident Procedure

• Creche staff will contact the parent/guardian immediately.
• Emergency medication will be administered as outlined in the child’s Medical Action Plan by Creche staff, the parent/guardian, or the operational team.
• A first aid report will be completed at the time of the incident.
• The parent/guardian is required to take the child home after the incident to monitor their condition.

If an incident occurs, crèche staff will provide appropriate first aid and complete an incident report form. Parents or guardians will be contacted and informed as soon as possible to ensure the child’s wellbeing.

No copies of incident reports

Copies of the report cannot be given to patients, guardians, or witnesses. If someone wishes to obtain a copy, they must apply through the council under the Freedom of Information Act.

If a child is sick upon arrival at the crèche, it is at the discretion of the crèche attendants to determine if the child will be permitted to attend. 

Medication:

• Crèche attendants will not administer any medications.

Children who have the following illnesses will not be able to attend creche:

• conjunctivitis
• vomiting (within the last 24 hours)
• severe coughing accompanied by discomfort
• contagious rashes (such as body rash or skin lesions)
• cold sores or school sores
• fever / chills (temperature exceeding 38 degrees)
• colds / runny noses, sore throat combined with fever
• head lice or nits (eggs)
  • If we suspect a child to have head lice, it may exclude the child from attending creche until treatment has commenced.
  • Your child may return to creche when all live head lice have been removed.
• chickenpox, measles, mumps
• gastroenteritis / diarrhoea
• hand, foot, and mouth disease
• general feeling of unwell. 

Please note: If your child is too unwell for school or childcare, they are also considered too unwell for creche.

In the event of an emergency evacuation, our staff will safely move all children from the Riverton or Cannington Crèche to the designated muster point, following our evacuation procedures.

Parents or guardians are welcome to accompany their children to the muster point if they are nearby. If at a different muster point, they should remain in a safe location until it is possible to return to the centre and crèche.

Once it is safe, parents or guardians will be required to sign their child out, either when returning to the crèche or, for longer evacuations, directly at the centre’s muster point.

Our crèches are NOT approved education and care services and are therefore not subject to the requirements of the Education and Care Services National Law (WA) Act 2012 and Education and Care Services National Regulations 2012.

Our dedicated and qualified staff provide a caring and secure environment where children can play, explore, and have fun. All team members hold current First Aid, Working with Children Check, and Police Clearance certifications.

• Children aged 12 weeks to 8 years of age are eligible to attend the creche service.
• Once a child has turned 9, they are no longer able to attend the creche service.

Please bring a labelled bag with:

• Drink bottle – water only
• Morning or afternoon tea
• Bottles and formula, if required
• Nappies and wipes
• Change of clothes
• Comfort items, such as a dummy or comforter
• Pram, if possible, for younger children who may need it for sleep or comfort

Please label all belongings with your child’s name to help prevent items being lost or mixed up.

Toys from home are not permitted.

Lost Property

• Lost property is kept at the Creche reception for three weeks.
• Staff will contact you if an item is left behind and arrange collection or storage for your next visit.
• Items not collected within three weeks may be donated or disposed of where required.

• Ensure your child has used the toilet or has a clean nappy before arrival.
• Let Creche staff know about any important routines or needs, such as sleep times or bottles.
• Parents/guardians are not permitted to stay in the Creche room, foyer area or Play Centre café.
• Stay on-site and available if your child becomes distressed, unwell or needs assistance.
• Label all belongings with your child’s name, including snacks, bags and bottles.
• Sign your child in on the daily Creche attendance sheet.

Morning tea: 10am – 10.20am

Afternoon tea: 5.30pm – 5.50pm

• Parents/guardians must provide their child’s food and drink bottle.
• Only food provided by the parent/guardian will be given to the child.
• Please prepare fruit as your child prefers and label all food, bottles and belongings.

The following are not permitted:

• Nuts or nut products, including “nut-free” alternatives
• Eggs
• Lollies or chocolate
• Popcorn
• Fizzy drinks or juice

Bottles

• Bottles will be given as required or as advised by the parent/guardian.
• For formula, please provide the correct amount of water in the bottle and the formula powder separately.

We’ve created a warm and welcoming space where your child can enjoy a variety of fun and engaging play options while visiting us.

For babies

Our baby areas include soft floor mats, baby gyms, toys, and bouncers to support comfort and sensory exploration.

For children

Children can enjoy hands on activities including imaginative play with our play kitchen, dolls, prams, car mat, and car towers. Craft activities with play-dough, drawing, and craft supplies offer plenty of opportunities for creative play. There's always something new to explore with our wide range of interactive toys.

Outdoor fun

Our outdoor area invites active play with tunnels, balance items, soft climbing gear, and balls for plenty of movement and fun. In warmer weather, water-based activities like splash / water tables, painting with water, and coloured ice add to the excitement.

Quiet areas

When a little downtime is needed, we offer a peaceful space with cushions, storybooks, and sometimes music playing. Occasionally, the TV is on at low volume for short intervals. It is offered purely as an optional form of relaxation and is never the focus of the creche session, as we offer variety of other engaging activities are always available.

We understand that starting Creche can be a big step for some children. Our staff are here to help make the experience as comfortable as possible.

• If your child is new to being cared for independently, we recommend starting with two short 30-minute visits.
• Visits can gradually increase to a maximum of 2 hours as your child becomes more comfortable.
• Tell staff about your child’s routines, needs and comfort strategies.
• Keep goodbyes short, calm and positive, and let your child know when you will return.
• A pram is recommended for children aged 12 weeks to 2 years, particularly if they may need to sleep or be comforted during their session.
• Stay on-site and available if your child becomes distressed, unwell or needs assistance.

Supporting Sleep and Rest

• Babies and toddlers who need a rest will be settled in their own pram and supervised in a quiet area.
• Staff will check on sleeping children regularly and record their sleep times to share with parents/guardians at pick-up.
• Children who do not need to sleep but require some quiet time can rest on cushions or fold-out couches.

We ask that parents and guardians provide the following for their child:

• Nappies
• Wipes
• Spare clothing

Arrival

• Please ensure your child arrives with a clean nappy.
• If a child arrives with a soiled or full nappy, it should be changed before leaving the creche.
• We also ask that children use the toilet upon arrival, if possible.

During the Day

• Our team checks nappies and supports toileting regularly to keep your child comfortable and happy.
• While we encourage independence, the creche does not provide full toilet training due to the mixed age groups in each room. Some children may still need pull-ups until they feel confident using the toilet on their own.

Sunscreen Application

Please apply sunscreen to your child/children before arriving for their session. Our staff are unable to apply it due to potential allergies.

Hats

Parent / guardians are to provide a hat for their child / children for outdoor play. Preferred styles include legionnaire, broad-brimmed, or bucket hats.

Indoor Play

If a hat is not provided, your child will stay indoors and engage in activities with staff members.

We also monitor UV levels to decide the safest times for outdoor play. When the UV rating is high, we will limit outdoor activities to protect the children from harmful sun exposure.

Special Crèche Crafts

Our special crèche crafts run monthly, with a week-long theme of fun and engaging craft activities for the children.

School Holiday Crafts

During each school holiday, we run craft and sensory activities designed to stimulate creativity and play. These activities are run in conjunction with our Cannington Leisureplex school holiday promotions.
