Canning gets behind community projects
16 October 2026

The first of the City of Canning’s two major Community Grant rounds for 2026/27 has concluded, with a total of $109,369 awarded to 29 eligible community and sporting organisations within Canning.

Each financial year, the City of Canning provides more than $200,000 in community grants, supporting not-for-profit sporting clubs community groups, school P&C’s and individuals for projects that help build a more inclusive and thriving community.

“The events, activities and projects led by our community are inspiring, creating many opportunities for residents to participate in sport, art, music and cultural activities in Canning” said City of Canning Deputy Mayor Mark Bain. “This round we have supported a broad range of commemorative and celebratory events such as Anzac Day, Remembrance Day, cultural celebrations and events that bring community together.”

“Funded projects align with aspirations and goals within our new Council Plan 2026-2031, with many projects supporting equipment for local sporting clubs and cultural events open to the broader community.”

Yokai received a grant to hold Still We Sing, a free country music festival featuring Aboriginal musicians held at the former Sister Kate’s Children’s Home site in Queens Park.

“This grant assists us to hold an event to bring Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal community members together to celebrate Aboriginal culture and country music in honour of the Stolen Generations,” explained Sherri Bagshaw, Healing Centre Manager at Yokai.

“The gathering aims to honour the strength of Stolen Generations survivors, celebrate Aboriginal culture and music and reclaim a place once marked by separation as a place of healing and connection.”

Still We Sing takes place on Friday 23 October, featuring live performances by Rhythm Tide, Jonny Ford Band and Yellowstone. Entry is free, but tickets are required, available at bit.ly/StillWeSingCanning

The next major grant round will open in early January 2027, closing 2 March 2027. To find out more about the successful grant applicants, or the grant application process, please visit bit.ly/CanningCommunityGrants.

In addition to its major grant rounds, the City offers smaller grants of up to $500 throughout the year, helping to build volunteer capacity and enabling residents to deliver local community initiatives.
