Canning Libraries Celebrate Children’s Book Week

The City of Canning will celebrate Children's Book Week from 22-28 August, with a range of free events for kids of all ages at Canning Libraries.

This year’s theme, Symphony of Stories, celebrates the way stories connect, inspire and bring communities together through imagination, creativity and shared experiences.

Throughout the week, Canning Libraries will be hosting an exciting program of author talks, illustration workshops, storytelling sessions and creative activities to celebrate the joy of reading for children of all ages.

Kicking off the week, award-winning children’s book author Steve Herron will be at Cannington Library on Saturday 22 August, hosting two workshops, ‘Funny Bones – the F(art) of Writing Funny Stuff’ for kids aged 9 to 11, and ‘Dragon Tears Creative Workshop’ for kids aged 8 to 10 years.

Other highlights include a Design Your Own Foam Shield workshop with cosplay specialists - PlaybyProxy, Deb Fitzpatrick’s Explore Writing Workshop, Storytime and Craft with Narelle Wynter, Storytime with Sandra Ruddie and Lockie the Dog, and Kylie Howarth’s Illustration Workshop.

For younger children, Rhymes and Stories will also feature on the list of family-friendly activities throughout the week at Willetton, Riverton and Cannington Libraries.

Mayor Patrick Hall said Children's Book Week shines a spotlight on the important role reading plays in a child’s development.

"Reading opens the door to creativity, curiosity and lifelong learning, and Children's Book Week is a fantastic way to encourage children to explore new stories and ideas.

"We’re proud to support a diverse program of free events at Canning Libraries that makes literature accessible, engaging and fun for local children and families,” said Mayor Hall.

Book Week activities at Canning Libraries are supported by the Children's Book Council of Australia (CBCA).

All events are free and open to the public. However, places are limited and bookings are essential.
